Hi, I’m Laura.
A tick stole my cheeseburger.
More specifically, a Lone Star tick handed me something called Alpha-Gal Syndrome — a condition in which your immune system suddenly decides mammal products are public enemies. Which sounds fake, honestly.
And yet here we are. If you are reading this you probably fall into one of three categories: this has to be a joke, I've got this and it ain't no joke, a friend or loved one has it and they never joke.
This website exists because Alpha-Gal is weird. Confusing. Overwhelming. Occasionally ridiculous. And because when I was first diagnosed, I desperately needed someone calm, funny, practical, and mildly sarcastic to explain what was happening without making me feel like I’d been dropped into a medically themed escape room.
So that’s what I’m trying to be here.
At No Mam, you’ll find:
Real-life stories about navigating Alpha-Gal
Safe product finds and food ideas
Hidden ingredient “gotchas”
Medical absurdities
Honest conversations about fear, frustration, and rebuilding
My pretty pictures
Dry humor, because humor is cheaper than therapy and easier to carry around
I’m not a doctor nor an epidemiologist so I can't tell you where it came from or how to treat it. I’m just a woman who got bitten by something smaller than a sesame seed and decided to start taking notes.
My hope is that this space feels less like a doom-filled medical forum and more like having a fairly informed friend text you: "This is ridiculous, but we’re going to handle it.”
So whether you’re newly diagnosed, deep in the label-reading trenches, supporting someone you love, or simply wondering why a tick would declare war on brisket — welcome.
I’m glad you’re here.
