Vegan Naan

I have not yet conquered the world of yeast so I was hesitant to try but thank goodness I did. This is pretty simple and really delicious. Goes well with my Butter Chicken but I've been know to scarf them down just waiting for the Butter Chicken to cook.

Preparation Steps

Ingredients

1. Combine the yeast and the sugar in a bowl and then add in the warm water. I usually a thermometer to make sure that it's right between 105° and 110°. Give it a stir and let it sit until it froths. It could take a few minutes. Have more patience than I had the first five attempts.

2. Add the flour, salt, baking powder, coconut cream (or yogurt) and olive oil and mix with a wooden spoon. Then plop it out onto a floured surface and knead for 2 minutes. If it gets sticky, add a touch more flour. It should end up being smooth and soft.

3. Put the ball in a bowl and cover with a towel for about 1/2 an hour. Don't peak.

  • 1 tsp instant yeast

  • 1 tsp AG safe granulated sugar

  • 3/4 cup warm water (105°-110°)

  • 2 cups flour (King Arthur is safe for me)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 3/4 tsp baking powder

  • 3 TBS coconut cream

  • 2 TBS olive oil

4. After it rises, flatten the dough and split it into 8-10 pieces - depending on the size naan you want.

6. Put your rolled naan in the pan and heat until you have achieved bubbles and the bottom is a pretty color, then flip and let it cook another minute or so. This is more of an eyeball situation than a 'set your timer' thing.

5. Heat your pan. I use a rather shallow pan to make it easier to get it in and out. Take a piece of the dough and roll it out on a floured surface. This is no easy task but you'll get there.

To keep it warm while you make the rest, wrap it in a kitchen towel or aluminum foil.

This recipe contains no mammal meat and no dairy, but Alpha-Gal tolerances vary enormously.

Check your own brands and ingredients against the things you personally avoid.

If you don't like coconut cream you can use non-dairy plain yogurt. I like cocojune.

My version was adapted from Nora Cook's Easy Vegan Naan, among others.
